Animal Homes & HabitatsEverything that is living needs a home. An animal is a living thing. Animals grow. They start out as babies and grow into adult animals. They need water, sunlight, food and air to live and grow properly. For an animal to grow like it is supposed to it needs to live where it can get what it needs. Because there are many different kinds of animals they live in many different places. The place that an animal lives in is called its habitat. There are many different types of habitats that make a home for all the different types of animals. Animals also need SHELTER to PROTECT them from the weather or other animals. Since most animals live near the type of food they eat the type of shelter they live will depend on the habitat. A beaver makes a dam, a lion hides in the bushes and a bee lives in a hive. Some animals live in the hot, dry DESERT. The desert is one type
habitat. These animals are able to go for long periods with just a little water.
Some animals live in the JUNGLE. Monkeys live in the jungles. The trees
there make a perfect habitat for them.
Some types of animals live in the water. Can you think of some? Large fish, like sharks and whales, live in the OCEAN. Smaller animals like frogs, turtles and trout live in or near rivers and lakes. Your backyard may even be a HABITAT to some animals. Do you have a pet? Your home is his habitat. Squirrels can live in the FOREST but also in your backyard. Worms live in an UNDERGROUND habitat.
