Animals Need Food
All animals need food. They need to eat just like we need to eat. Different types of animals eat different kinds of food. Some animals are PLANT EATERS. They eat only food that is a plant. Horses are plant eaters. They eat hay, grass and grains. Some birds are plant eaters only. They eat berries, seeds and nuts. Different types of insects are plant eaters. Can you think of some animals that eat plants?
Other animals are ANIMAL EATERS. This means they eat other animals. A praying mantis is an animal eater. It eats insects that are bad for our gardens. Lions are animal eaters. They hunt and eat other animals such as gazelles. Animals that hunt their food are called PREDATORS. An animal that is hunted by another animal is called the PREY. Some animals can be both predator and prey. Snakes are predators. They hunt and eat mice and other small animals. But snakes are eaten by other animals as well. Then they become the prey. The snake is part of the FOOD CHAIN. A food chain is a link of animals that eat each other or plants. The food chain always starts with a plant. A food chain might look like this:
Many animals eat plant and animal food. People are animals and most people eat plant and animal foods. Bears eat nuts and berries but they also eat fish. Animals Need Food activities & worksheets to go with this lesson. Animals Need a Home Science Lesson More Resources:
