Tips on Bathing Your Baby
Bath time can be one of the most relaxing times for parents and baby,
or it can be something you both dread. Here are some tips on how to make bath
time easier.
- Don't tub bathe baby until the
umbilical cord falls off.
- Make sure you have everything
you need before you start. Keep a basket stocked with supplies handy.
- Use an extra bath towel or a
foam piece designed for the tub to keep baby from slipping.
- Make sure the water isn't too
hot. You can check the water temperature with a child safe, floating bath
thermometer that does the trick wonderfully.
- Hold baby securely and gently
lower him into the tub. A warm washcloth draped across baby's middle helps him
feel secure.
- Remember newborns do not need
tub baths at first. Sponge baths are fine. After that a tub bath 2 or 3 times
a week is more than enough on baby's gentle skin.
- Use a mild soap like Dove.
Babies have delicate skin.
- NEVER, ever leave a
baby unattended in the bath. If the phone rings, or you have to leave the
room, grab a towel, bundle him and go.
- Considering putting baby in
the tub with you. It's easy and you can enjoy each other and some warm and wet
snuggle time.
