Did you ever look into a pond and see just a pair of eyes peeping out at you? If you did you might have been looking at the bullfrog. It often hides in the pond this way to be on the lookout for danger.
The bullfrog gets its name from the deep sound it can make. It’s more like the loud noise a cow or other animal would make then a small frog!
The bullfrog has big bulging eyes that have special lids to protect them and special glands to keep them moist. Because of the way his eyes are positioned he can’t see in front of his nose. He has to turn his head to the side just a little bit to see any prey in front of him.
Where would you rather eat lunch, in the kitchen or bathtub? Well the bullfrog likes to eat his dinner underwater. Because he is bigger then most frogs not only does he eat insects, bugs and small fish but he can also eat other frogs , small mammals and even baby alligators.
During mating season the male bullfrog bellows as loud as he can to let the females know he is around. This also tells other males to stay away. The female spawns (lays her eggs) and the male fertilizes them. She can lay over 10,000 eggs at one time. When the eggs hatch the little tadpoles live totally in the water until it develops into a full-grown frog.
Bullfrogs get to be about 6 inches long and weigh approximately 2 ounces. The male is bigger then the female. Bullfrogs can jump very high and far and some people race them for fun.
